Thespis

or

The Gods Grown Old

The Gods on Mount Olympus are old and tired, so decide to take a vacation to earth while a group of traveling actors take their place.

Thespis opened on December 26, 1871, at the Gaiety Theatre and ran for 64 performances. This was the first collaborative effort between Gilbert and Sullivan. Most of Sullivan's original music has been lost, but Gilbert's libretto has survived.

In the early 2000s, Durham Savoyards music director Alan Riley Jones began work on composing new Sullivan-style music for the opera. The new work was presented in a concert reading in 2004. Jones then set about the task of orchestrating his piano score. The completed work received its world premiere in 2017.
