Thespis or The Gods Grown Old The Gods on Mount Olympus are old and tired, so decide to take a vacation to earth while a group of traveling actors take their place. Thespis opened on December 26, 1871, at the Gaiety Theatre and ran for 64 performances. This was the first collaborative effort between Gilbert and Sullivan. Most of Sullivan's original music has been lost, but Gilbert's libretto has survived.
